Volunteer for FIRST LEGO

The eighth annual FIRST Lego League (FLL) Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, November 20th, and we need your help! For those who have participated in the past... THANK YOU! For those who haven’t yet had the opportunity, I’ll briefly fill you in and hope you’ll be enticed into joining us. The objective of FLL is to introduce middle-school students to the fun and experience of solving real-world problems by applying math, science, and technology through the building of Lego robots. FIRST further inspires students with the excitement of a head-to-head competitive sports event and an invitation to present findings from a team research project. Through the 2010 Body Forward™ Challenge, FLL teams will explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives. Additional information can be found on the FLL web site.

The 2010 tournament will be held at Dominican High School in New Orleans and runs from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on the 20th of November. Volunteers are needed as judges, referees, game announcers, timekeepers, photographers, team queuers, pit crew runners, registration desk workers, traffic directors, and Lego playing table monitors (see attached Volunteer Job Descriptions). Half-day and full-day slots are available, and lunch is provided. If you are interested in judging or refereeing, it is a full day commitment with training for judges on Wednesday, Nov. 17th , from 6:30 -9pm at UNO and training for referees on Saturday, Nov. 13th, from 8:30am to 1pm at Tulane University. All other positions are OJT (on the job training!).

We have grown from an initial 15 team tournament in 2003 to an expected 60 teams from around the state participating this year in the 8th annual Louisiana tournament. It should be quite an event! If you are available and interested in participating, If you are available and interested in participating, please fill out the 2010 FLL Volunteer Form and email it to me at annette.oertling@tulane.edu. You can find job descriptions at Volunteer Job Descriptions.  If you have any questions, please contact me for more details.

Sincerely,
